What this shows

  • 4,41,534 cases of crime against women were registered in 2024, 64.6 per lakh women, down 1.5% from 4,48,211 (66.2) in 2023.
  • Cruelty by husband or relatives was the largest head (1,20,227 cases, 27.2%), followed by kidnapping and abduction of women (67,829, 15.4%), POCSO (67,809, 15.4%) and assault on women with intent to outrage modesty (48,303, 10.9%).
  • Delhi (130.7 per lakh women), Telangana (128.6) and Odisha (118.3) had the highest rates in 2024; Uttar Pradesh registered the most cases (66,398). NCRB cautions against ranking states on these figures alone.

What exactly is measured

Crimes against women registered by the police per lakh women, from the National Crime Records Bureau's Crime in India: offences under the IPC (from 1 July 2024 the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) and Special and Local Laws such as POCSO where the victim is a girl or woman. It counts cases registered, so better reporting can push it up. Each year is the rate published in that year's edition; all use the same population projections (July 2020).
