What this shows

  • India generated 1,847.9 billion units of electricity in 2025-26, only 1.04% more than 1,828.9 billion units in 2024-25; 2024-25 had grown 5.21% as first published.
  • Thermal generation fell 4.1% to 1,307.1 billion units while renewables rose 21.8% to 310.6 billion units (solar 174.8, wind 106.7) and large hydro 12.5% to 167.2.
  • Coal and other thermal plants still produced about 71% of the electricity in 2025-26, although non-fossil sources were 53% of installed capacity.

What exactly is measured

Electricity generated in India in a financial year, in billion units (kWh), as the Central Electricity Authority totals it: thermal, nuclear, large hydro and renewables (including small hydro), plus a small import from Bhutan (7.8 billion units in 2025-26). CEA added renewables to this total from 2022-23; earlier totals left them out, so they are not shown.
